Forest Lakes

The History

Forest Lakes is a planned residential community located in northern Albemarle County, just outside Charlottesville. It was established beginning in 1989 and developed over the 1990s as the county’s largest planned unit development at the time. The community was constructed in two phases – Forest Lakes North and Forest Lakes South – and was designed around existing neighborhoods like Hollymead, incorporating established streetscapes and green spaces.

The area quickly grew in popularity, drawing families, professionals, and University of Virginia employees seeking a suburban setting with close proximity to the city. Forest Lakes has since expanded to include more than 1,400 homes, offering both townhomes and single-family residences. Despite its growth, the neighborhood has maintained a strong sense of community and long-term stability. Today, it remains a prominent residential area within Charlottesville’s northern corridor, offering access to both amenities and natural beauty.
